SumUp also offers an iPad-based point of sale (POS) system. The solutions consist of a proprietary and EMV-certified end-to-end payment gateway, terminal hardware, and mobile apps. SumUp is authorized as a payment institution by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). SumUp is also certified by Europay, MasterCard, Visa (EMV), and PCI-DSS.

Since entering the market in August 2012, SumUp has expanded into 15 countries, including Germany, the UK, Brazil, and the USA. The company is funded by American Express, Groupon, BBVA Ventures, and several other reputable venture capital firms.

The Challenge

The SumUp POS Register features intuitive operation with maximum flexibility, so dealers can save on long periods of training for their employees. SumUp had to look for barcode scanners that were as intuitive and easy to use as its popular POS solution.

Jacques Hörter (the Director of Business Owner Point of Sale at SumUp) and Christoph Hilbert (the CEO of ime mobile solutions) first met Socket Mobile's distributor at a trade show. After a subsequent presentation in Berlin, they decided to integrate the Socket Mobile scanner into the cash register software for mPOS specialists.

The Socket Mobile Solution

The Socket Mobile ecosystem was a compelling choice for three reasons. First, it is excellently compatible with Apple products, thanks to an integrated Apple chip. Second, the SocketScan 10 Software Development Kit allows this compatibility to be fully brought to life. Third, the software application controls the scanner and not vice versa. This is the only way for the user to really take advantage of the scanner's many additional functions in a transparent, stable, and reliable way.

Of course, the scanners themselves underwent product testing, the outcome of which helped form the final decision. Jacques Hörter was very enthusiastic about the scanners' convenience, robustness, and ease of use.

The Results

Jacques Hörter further praised the product saying, "We subjected the scanner to a stress test: Using 20 checkouts side by side with scanners at the 'Berlin Vital' expo prior to the Berlin Marathon. The scanners withstood the enormous pressure without any problems. I am impressed!"

"We look forward to a long and successful collaboration," said Christoph Hilbert from ime mobile solutions GmbH." The Socket Mobile scanners with iOS hardware are our driving force for the mPOS market." He added, with a view to the future, "We see strong growth in this market in the coming year."
