How we helped BSS succeed

The Customer

BSS Business Software Solutions GmbH (BSS) is a Hamburg-based company that develops software for the timber and veneer industries. A customer order inspired TIMBERplus, an individually adaptable software solution that supports virtually all aspects of industrial timber and veneer work. We provide market-leading software with an unrivaled support system. Our international customer base relies on us for top-of-the-line solutions to their current and future software needs.

The Challenge

We wanted to provide our customers with an easy-to-use, cost-effective scanning solution. We previously implemented many Apple iPads/iPods in projects that used the camera function to scan barcoded veneer bundles. It became apparent, however, that this was a time-consuming function. The camera was not able to decode all the barcodes, especially the badly printed ones. This resulted in users typing in barcodes manually, which could then lead to human error.

Additionally, our iPad Production Terminal (as shown in the picture) is fixed and protected by a metal case due to its harsh environment. This makes it difficult to get the flexibility needed to scan barcodes.

The Socket Mobile Solution

The design of the SocketScan S700 series works perfectly with our iPad Production Terminal and allows our customers to have freedom of movement away from the fixed terminal.

We also wanted to provide our customers with an affordable mobile pocket device and found that the DuraSled DS800 series for the iPod Touch was the perfect solution. It allows our customers to walk around their warehouses (which can be very large) and sell/check their wood inventory without having to go back to the iPad Production Terminal to check the data. Therefore, it saves them time and makes their warehouse processes more efficient. The DuraCase also comes with the added benefit of protecting the iPod, which is required in the dusty environment it is used in. Paired with Socket Mobile's charging dock with magnetic contacts, this is the ideal mobile device to use in warehouse management.

The Results

We currently have 12 Applications for the iPhone / iPad that are enabled for use with Socket Mobile scanners. These can be found on the Socket Mobile Business Applications page. In addition, we plan to develop several new Socket Mobile-compatible Applications this year.

With Socket Mobile devices, our customers can scan more barcodes, helping them make their warehouse processes more effective by reducing human error. By replacing the time-consuming process of camera-scanning barcodes, Socket Mobile scanners give our customers more time to spend on their work.
