Digital ID - Making Waves Across the Globe

Digital IDs are on the fast track to becoming commonplace, actively being tested and implemented around the world. Using digital IDs can help keep important documents in a single place without having to carry around multiple cards or paper documents. This reduces the risk of sensitive information getting lost or stolen. This new emerging technology can help to reduce the chances of fraud in situations such as bank account applications and give people control over what personal information they share and with who.
Officials in many jurisdictions are becoming aware of the benefits that digital IDs present, and the credentials are beginning to gain traction with government agencies worldwide. Countries are launching pilot trials and addressing the many questions and concerns that have risen from the introduction and adoption of digital IDs.
Here's a look at how digital IDs are being tested and used around the world:
Faster Licensing
In the Philippines, digital IDs are helping reduce the licensing backlog that has been created by a shortage of laser engraving units that creates physical IDs. By switching to digital ID, they are able to speed up the process of obtaining a license. In December of 2022, it is estimated that the backlog sat at 92,000, which was dealt with in full in January of 2023. The Philippines is also offering a hybrid option for their driver's licenses so drivers can apply for digital ID and then receive a physical card shortly after.
E-signature and Payment Systems
The government of Thailand has a goal of registering 10 million people with digital IDs. In fact, Thailand has implemented the three major digital platforms: National ID, Mobile ID, and D.DOPA. By 2024, D.DOPA is expected to launch the e-signature, e-certificate, e-payment, and e-receipt system, as well as adding more services in the future.
Protect Confidential Information
Canada is launching a pilot project designed to protect the privacy of their citizens. Currently, when one is required to confirm their identity, they must show their driver's license or provincial ID. This exposes their address, date of birth, license or ID number, as well as their photo. By implementing digital ID, the information being accessed is limited to only that which is needed and can even be kept hidden to the verifier completely. The ID system itself does all the work.
Digital Wallet
Every citizen of the European Union will soon be able to use a personal digital wallet. This allows them to use mobile phone apps for identification online or off. They can store information such as full name, date of birth, nationality, and photo, within the wallet, and have the ability to share said information as needed. Other practical uses of digital ID in the EU include: opening a bank account, filing tax returns, applying to university, proving age, storing medical prescriptions, checking into a hotel, and renting a car.
